My Adonai

Have you ever sat and meditated on what a great God we serve? Adonai is a divine name translated as “Lord,” and signifying, from its derivation, “sovereignty.” It is found in the Massoretic Text. ” YHWH ” is the letters, and when the Hebrew reader came to these letters, he always substituted in pronunciation the word ” ‘adhonay.” The Hebrew substituted this word because he felt YHWH was too sacred to be uttered.

This name God uses for Himself reveals to us an aspect of His character that signifies His greatness. God is the Master and majestic Lord God. He is our total authority. He is my Lord, my great Lord!

In Psalm 8:1 David speaks of His greatness. “O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.”  He then proceeds to expound on how great God is by how He has treated man. Especially when mankind is nothing, compared to Him.

Psalm 8:4-6 “What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honor. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put under his feet:”

God is majestic, He is great, He is good. He is Lord over everything, even when people do not make him their Lord. He is still in control, and his greatness will supersede anyone or anything else!

The great prophet Isaiah proclaimed this in chapter 40. He makes it very clear what he thinks about the greatness of the Lord.

Isaiah 40:3-5 “The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain: And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.”

We are to worship and honor him in all we do. When we come together corporately we should praise him and proclaim his greatness. In my mind, I view that time as an opportunity to express what has been building in my heart all week. Sometimes His awesomeness overwhelms me, and I can’t contain the tears of joy. I express that best when I sing. The song “How Great Thou Art” truly expresses how I feel about the majesty of my God.

How often have you thought about His greatness and how awesome He really is? We should meditate on His majesty and His greatness. His excellent name is to be reverenced, praised, shouted from the housetop, and celebrated to the max!

Psalm 96:4 “For the LORD is great, and greatly to be praised: he is to be feared above all gods.”

Psalm 8:9 “O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!”

When I think on this revelation of His character I am ready to let what is felt on the inside of me flow to the outside. Are you ready to worship privately and corporately?  Are you ready to express His greatness at church? If not, get ready. He is excellent and greatly to be praised! Let’s let the world know how we feel about our GOD!!!!!!
