An Upside-Down Christian

In America, we are headed to the polls to vote. Everywhere you look there are signs, advertisements, or rallies for those running for office. Even our mailboxes and phones have been inundated with politicians wanting our vote. All try to say what they think will “stir the pot” to place positive attention on them. The position the candidates have on morality seem to get overridden by economic issues. I see many who are Christians, those who stand for morality and biblical principles, lose all reasoning power when election time comes. They hate abortion, yet when it comes time to vote, their main objective is to elect someone who will put more money in their pocket. They are upside-down in their thinking.

They are upside-down because the sin of covetousness has changed their perspective. The real issues of right and wrong become muddied when it effects their desire for more. I’m not alarmed that so many are guided by their money, but I am alarmed that so many feel this way, but they can’t see what their choice says about themselves.

We all are guided by what is most important to us. For some it’s money, others it’s family, some even elevate their jobs as the most important, but for a Christian, it should be about pleasing Christ. If that is your answer, then the Bible should guide your vote.

If a candidate is promoting something that is anti-biblical principles, we should not vote for them. Anyone who believes abortion is ok is not following the Bible. All life is precious to God. He is the giver of life and He, and He alone, is to be the taker of life.

Psalm 139:13-16 “For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb.

I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.”

Look what he said to Jerimiah.

Jerimiah 1:5 “Before I formed thee in the belly, I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.”

Anyone who is for abortion is off my list. I can’t support someone who believes it’s ok to kill a baby. They may offer me the greatest package of benefits in the world, but the price of another’s life is too high to pay.

What about gambling, alcohol, homosexuality, following the laws of the land etc. All these issues are dealt with in the Bible, and we need to study them out. We are to obey those who are in authority, unless they require us to disobey God. We need to find out what God says and stand with Him above anything else.

I Timothy 2:2 “For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.”

Act 5:29 “Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.”

Voting is a right that we should exercise. It is our opportunity to stand for what is right, and we should take it. I understand sometimes choosing a candidate is hard, because none of them may be godly people. Sometimes we must choose the lesser of two evils. In that case look at all the issues and pray.

Choose wisely on all the issues. Make sure your vote is not determined by how much it may gain you financially. The verses below will help you to understand why that should not be your determining factor.

Luke 12:15 “And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

Colossians 3:5 “Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:”

Hebrews 13:5 “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
