Choosing Life

All you need to do to hear this phrase is to turn on the TV. Many states have passed recent laws banning or restricting abortions. They are standing up for the life of the unborn child. Since 1974 when Roe vs. Wade made it legal to murder babies there have been 61,280,602 abortions in the U.S. What a horrific tragedy! According to statistics, these are the top three reasons women seek abortions. 1) a baby would interfere with their responsibilities at work, school, etc. 2) ¾ say they can’t afford a child and 3) they don’t want to be a single parent or having a baby would cause problems with their spouse or partner. All of these are the exhibition of selfishness to the core. There are no noble reasons to murder.

In Exodus chapter 1 Pharaoh is fearful of the continual increase in the number of the Hebrews. They were slaves to the Egyptians, but now there were more Hebrews than there were Egyptians. This caused great fear in the mind of Pharaoh.

Exodus 1:9 “And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we:”

He devised a plan to have all the male babies killed at birth. However, his plan failed. Moses was born and his parents hid him for 3 months. Because Jochebed and Amram chose life, God gave them a plan to spare their child.

Exodus 2:3-10 “And when she could no longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and she laid it in the flags by the river’s brink. And his sister stood afar off, to wit what would be done to him. And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river; and her maidens walked along by the river’s side; and when she saw the ark among the flags, she sent her maid to fetch it. And when she had opened it, she saw the child: and, behold, the babe wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrews’ children. Then said his sister to Pharaoh’s daughter, Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee? And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, Go. And the maid went and called the child’s mother. And Pharaoh’s daughter said unto her, Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the woman took the child, and nursed it. And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water.”

God not only gave them a plan to spare their child, but He also provided for them to take care of their child. The princess paid Moses mother to take care of him and allowed him to live in his own home. Now that is taking care of things! They had determined to obey God and not murder their child and God provided above what they needed.

Moses lived in a vile culture where death meant nothing. It was a very dangerous place for a Hebrew baby boy but because of the obedience of his parents, a great man of God lived a full life for God. Moses grew to a man that was greatly used by God. God gave the 10 commandments to him; He chose him to lead His people out of bondage. Moses was God’s man.

Today our culture is just as dangerous for any unborn child. The Mother’s womb should be the safest place for a baby, but instead, in thousands of cases, it’s the most unsafe place to be.

What was so different about Moses parents as opposed to those of today? Why did they not yield to the fear that was all around from Pharaoh? The difference was faith. In Hebrews 11:23 we are told his parents were not afraid of the king’s commandment concerning the killing of their male child. It was faith that caused them to follow God’s direction and not mans. They believed that following God was the supreme goal for their life. Their life was in danger because they disobeyed the King, and so was their son’s, but that was not the determining factor for obedience. It was their faith in a God, who not only controlled life on earth but their eternal life. They chose life for all eternity.

Hebrews 11:23 “By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment.”
