Conquering Loneliness

If you have ever felt intense loneliness this devotion is for you. It may be the loss of a loved one that has left a hole in your heart and the pain intensifies with time as the loneliness covers you. You may be lonely because of the betrayal of the one you love. Many are lonely in the middle of a crowd of people. God built us to be interactive, social creations. We are made in His image, and He is one God, manifested in three persons. While God needs nothing, He demonstrates our need for others through His interaction with the Trinity. While God designed us to have wonderful fulfilling relationships here on earth, they are not to take His place in our hearts. We are designed to be filled with Him. They will never satisfy us the way He does. He provides for us to conquer loneliness.

God created Adam to be a living soul, made in His image. From the dust of the earth, he created his physical body, but from God’s own breath, he gave life, intellect, and emotion to his body. God’s breath made him a living soul. The soul is the part of us that lives forever.

Genesis 2:7 “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”

After a period of time, and scripture doesn’t say how long, God created a “help meet” for Adam. He saw that Adam was alone, not alone in the sense of solitude, because he had a relationship with his creator, and all the animals and earth were his to enjoy. However, there was no one of his kind to share his life with. God gave him what He knew would increase his enjoyment and contentment of life.

Genesis 2:18 “And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a help meet for him.”

If you read Genesis chapters 1-3 you will not find Adam complaining of being alone. It was God that noted there was no one of his kind but him. Even before Eve was created, Adam was satisfied with God. God created that desire within all of us for himself. There is a place in each of us that only God can fill and when we are consumed with Him, we will be satisfied. At the time before Eve was created there was no sin in the world and the soul of Adam was at one with God.

We too can be satisfied with God if we will draw close to Him. How do we do that? We seek Him with our whole hearts. In Matthew 6:33 Jesus teaches us to “seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” We are to have an intense desire to know Him and spend time with Him. We cultivate this desire when we obey Him. One of the first requirements for seeking anything is to make finding it a priority. Once we are saved, it should be our lifelong passion to know Him more as each day brings us closer to standing before Him and spending eternity with Him. We can only know Him through spending time in His word. He did not give us 66 books of the Bible to ensure we would have something to read. He gave it to us to reveal Himself to us in all types of situations in life. He shows us who He is as we see Him in action throughout scripture.

As our relationship develops, we are so full of His presence that we no longer feel alone. No matter where we go, we communicate with Him in our minds and hearts. As we listen to the Holy Spirit that dwells within us, we have conversations all day long. For me, I constantly hear His reminder in my mind to check on someone that has not been faithful or is going through a sickness or struggle. When I stand in line at the grocery store, He prompts me to speak to the person ahead of me. To turn a conversation into spiritual things. He reminds me that every person is someone Jesus died for, and I am to be used for His glory to reach them. When I’m on social media I seek an opportunity to speak up for Him and remind others of who He is, of where they can find comfort and hope for the future.

As my relationship grows, He reminds me that all my needs will be supplied by Him and whatever He gives will be enough. Philippians 4:19 “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”

In Matthew 1:23 when the angel spoke to Mary, God was giving us a great promise that His Son would come to be with us. “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.” When we accept Him as our personal Savior, He is with us!

In John 14:16-17 Jesus told His disciples that when He went back to the Father He would send the Holy Spirit, the comforter, that He would abide with them forever. That is still the reality for those who receive Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Now mankind would experience God in an unprecedented way. A way that cannot be explained or felt by those who don’t know Him, but for those who do, it produces a Hallelujah lifestyle.

John 14:16-17 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it sees him not, neither knows him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

In Hebrews 13:5 the writer teaches us that we have no need to be covetous, but to be content. How can we do this? We are to remember He will supply our needs and that He is always with us. He is enough!

Hebrews 13:5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

In Deuteronomy 31:6, Joshua 1:5, and I Chronicles 28:20, God affirms to His followers that they are to not fear but be strong because He is with them. He will not leave them. He is on their side forever.

Deuteronomy 31:6 Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

Joshua 1:5 There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

I Chronicles 28:20And David said to Solomon his son, Be strong and of good courage, and do it: fear not, nor be dismayed: for the LORD God, even my God, will be with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee, until thou hast finished all the work for the service of the house of the LORD.

If you are lonely pull up close to Him. He has not moved, we have. Get alone with Him and spend time with Him. The more you know Him, the more you love Him. The more you love Him the more you want to know Him. It is the perfect answer to conquer loneliness.
