Today we celebrate motherhood. Motherhood is one of the greatest gifts God has given me. To know that you can influence and mold a life for all eternity is such an awesome responsibility and joy. I was blessed with two boys that blessed me in many ways, but most of all in their love for the Lord. I was also blessed with a godly mom. The value of a godly mom is beyond anything money or fame can offer. If you have children of your own, or if you have been given the opportunity to influence other children, you have the responsibility to teach them how to love and serve the Lord.
You can teach young women how to be a godly, virtuous wife. She needs to be taught to be trustworthy. Therefore, she can be trusted by her husband. You can teach her to seek to be the kind of wife that will support her husband in his endeavors, and her daily life with be a complement to his reputation. She will handle the household finances in a manner that is frugal.
Proverbs 31:10-12 “Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.”
Proverbs 31:23 “Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.”
Teach the young girls and women to work. Laziness is a sin for anyone, but it can wreak havoc on a family when Mom is lazy. She needs to learn to work with her hands. She needs to make sure her family is taken care of properly. Note that she gathers food for her family and gets up early to prepare for them and those who work for her. She works, buying and selling, gathering and examining, the things that she may buy. She is always thinking of someone else and seeking to do what is best for them. Titus 2:5 teaches that our first responsibility is to our family at home.
Proverbs 31:13-19 “She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. She is like the merchants’ ships; she bringeth her food from afar. She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens. She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms. She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night. She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.”
Titus 2:5 “To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.”
Teach your daughters to be compassionate and giving to others. Charity requires that we show generosity without any thought of what we will gain in return. God has blessed us so that we can share with others who are less fortunate and show them the love of Christ in action.
Proverbs 31:20 “She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.”
She takes care of her family in every way. She learns to do the things that will promote the well being of her family in a manner that saves money for other opportunities. When she speaks she shares wisdom and she is kind. She is strong and honorable in all her ways.
Proverbs 31:24-27 “She makes fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant. Strength and honor are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.”
Because of how she conducts herself and shows through her actions, that she is real and directed by the Lord, her children and her husband can rise and call her blessed. They praise her and are very grateful for her. She is a virtuous woman in every sense of the word.
Proverbs 31:28 “Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.”
If you are a woman, it would do you well to study Proverbs 31. You should be this kind of woman whether you have children or not. These verses teach us the value of a godly woman. This is a passage that a mother gave to her son, so he would find the right kind of wife. There are always others watching and you and I have a great opportunity to be a virtuous influence.
