When you hear the words “He is” you always want to finish the sentence. Your mind says He is what, or what is He. In Hebrews 1:1-4, God begins to tell us who Jesus is. The list is not exhaustive because we can list so many qualities of Jesus that this page could not hold, but God gives us an overview of the greatness of Jesus.
In Hebrews 1, God at many times and through many people spoke to mankind through the prophets. He spoke to Moses through a burning bush. He spoke to Joseph in a dream. Others were spoken to in visions, by an angel, or in an audible voice. Now, He will enter a new era, He will speak to us by His Son, Jesus Christ. He is the One who is an heir to all things.
Hebrews 1:1 “God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,”
He made the world and was the creator part of the Trinity. Colossians 1:16 reaffirms everything was made by Him. The things in Heaven and earth, both seen, and unseen, all were made by the second person of the Trinity. He is the creator!
Hebrews 1:2 “Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;”
John 1:1-3 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.”
Colossians 1:16 “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:”
Next, we see Jesus as the brightness of God’s glory. The radiance of God is shown through Jesus. He is the express image of God the Father in the flesh. This verse denotes His splendor, brightness, and His divine nature. It is exalting the dignity, honor, and exalted rank of Jesus. He is the express image of God the Father in bodily form. He came to earth in bodily form, was crucified, and resurrected, in bodily form, and will come again in bodily form. He is the brightness and fullness of God that we can see.
Hebrews 1:3 “Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;”
He is the one who purged our sins. To purge is to remove or rid of something unwanted. Not only are our sins unwanted, but they are also a separation between us and God. He is holy and cannot look upon sin. Our sins are covered with His perfect blood when we repent and receive Him as our Savior and Lord. Sin is awful, it is a nature we all inherit at birth. It is a reality of life. It is a power that is in the world. It will infect our hearts and minds. It is lethal and will doom us to eternal hell. Everyone is gripped by the power of sin before salvation, but once we have been purged or purified by the blood of Jesus, it no longer has the rule over us. He is our purifier.
He is on His throne as ruler. He is sitting now at the right hand of God the Father. He is the King of the Universe. He reigns over everything. Nothing happens that He cannot control. Nothing is a surprise to Him, and nothing is beyond Him. He reigns over the devil. The devil is powerful and is loose now, but he cannot be everywhere, and he can only do what God allows him to do.
Hebrews 1:4 “having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.”
He is better than the angels. This points us to the fact that He is above all things created even the heavenly creatures. He is a person that is alive and well. He loves, He thinks, He feels, He wills, and He has a body today. He can identify with us in every area of our lives. He suffered temptations just as we do, but He did not give in. His body was beaten and abused beyond recognition. He bodily arose from the grave and even ate with His disciples after His resurrection. He is a person that we will spend eternity with one day. You are as close to this person as you want to be. He longs for you and wants you to long for Him.
He Is God and He Is real! What is He to you?
