How Big Is God

A couple of years ago, ladies at our church enjoyed a lady’s tea. We seldom have the opportunity to just sit and enjoy one another’s company and worship together as women of faith. I was truly blessed and reminded of what a big God we worship.

The awesomeness of God never leaves my mind, but as I saw each lady share her “cardboard testimony,” I was brought to tears by the tragedies some have faced, and survived, with a worshipful heart. Some, in our minds, seem to have shared far more tragedy than one person ever ought to experience, but what do we gauge that by? We usually gauge everything by our own experiences. However, when compared to Stephen, Paul, David, or many modern-day saints, who have been martyred for their faith, it all seems small. Our God is big enough to heal the brokenhearted, bind up our wounds, and comfort us like no other. The verse in Luke 4:18 is Jesus speaking to us.

Luke 4:18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,”

One shared how her mom abandoned her at age 4, but God placed other godly ladies in her life as moms to her. Another had tragedies in each phase of life, parents killed at age 12, aggressive breast cancer at 48, and loss of a daughter with 3 little ones at age 57. No matter what the tragedy God provided the strength, grace, and mercy to stand strong in Him. Others suffered anorexia, depression, anxiety, lack of love, lack of understanding, or physical problems, but all were examples of our big God, and his knowledge of us and what we need. In Psalm 139, David acknowledges the omniscient power of God. He knows all from our beginning to our end. That’s our big God.

Psalm 139:1-6 “To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.   For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether. Thou hast beset me behind and before and laid thine hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.”

This God that is big enough to create everything, who gives life and takes life, who is powerful enough to wipe mankind from the face of this earth, is still interested in me. He understands me and knows every thought I have, and yet still loves me. He wants an intimate personal relationship with me! This insignificant me can call the God of the universe Father! How awesome is that?

No matter how many family members you have here, or how many friends you have, you will never have anyone that is more interested in having a relationship with you than God. There is no one who is more capable of helping you than the God who created you. He also will be with those that help you.

Psalm 54:4 “Behold, God is mine helper: the Lord is with them that uphold my soul.”

Our God is big enough to control anything and everything, but because of His love for us, he gives us a free will, to live our lives. He wants us to choose Him above everything else in our lives. He longs to prove Himself to us if we will only let Him.
