As you look throughout scripture you will notice there are many different names for God. Not different gods, one God exhibiting different character traits. Each of the many names of God describes a different aspect of His character. I love to study these and use them in the adoration part of my prayer time.
One that is especially dear to me is Elohim. It means God, the all-powerful creator. It is a Hebrew word that speaks of the power God exhibited as the creator. El signifies the strong God as he brought all the world out of nothing.
Genesis 1:1 & 2 “In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.”
All God did was speak! It was done, not just done, but perfect! When he was finished with each day he would say “it is good.” When he created man he said, “it is very good.”
God the creator could have brought everything into existence any way he wanted to because he’s that powerful. He is Elohim!
Every day someone in the media talks about our earth and how it is millions of years old, or how we have evolved from something else. I say to them God’s own words when Job questioned him in Job 38.
Job 38:4-9 “Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it? Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof; When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb? When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddling band for it,”
Many mornings I look out over the lake as I’m beginning my prayer time. I see nature at its best. Even though it’s been tainted by sin, it’s still better than any camera or brush could ever capture. The Master artist gave me this beauty to enjoy.
I have a place in a bedroom upstairs, where I can sit in solitude. That is where I study, pray and think. I use a chair that swivels and when I am finished studying I turn and look across the lake. I thank my God, Elohim, my creator, and creator of all, for the beauty he has allowed me to enjoy. I’m amazed that each day there is a little something different that catches my eye. The splendor of creation is beyond words. Only my God could be this magnificent in his show of creative power. My God is an awesome God, Elohim, an all-powerful creator!
Look around today and appreciate the beauty of the Creator.
