My Heart Is Fixed

To fix something is to correct it, to make it do what it was designed to do. As a Christian, my heart was designed by a holy God to worship Him. He designed me with a need for Him. However, because of the fall of mankind, I now have a sinful nature. This sinful nature causes me to be self-centered, instead of God-centered. The only way for my heart to turn again toward God is for me to surrender to the conviction of the Holy Spirit, to yield my life to God, and to repent of my sins. Sounds simple, right? It is if I keep my focus on Him.

In Psalm 57:7, David is expressing his gratitude for deliverance from King Saul’s attempt on his life. David has been through many attempts to kill him in his life, but he never wavers in his trust in God. He is steadfast and unmovable in his faith. His heart is “fixed.” In the Hebrew language, the word fixed is to be erect, certain, direct, set, or established. It is amazing to me how his prayer starts with David feeling so depressed, so needy, yet the longer he prays the more his heart is lifted, and his heart turns to praise!

Psalm 57:4 “My soul is among lions: and I lie even among them that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.

Psalm 57:7 “My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed: I will sing and give praise.

The determination of our hearts should not be based on circumstances. It should be based on the truth of God’s word. When we have our focus on God, we will feel secure knowing He is in control. We may not understand, but we can survive and even grow in our faith during the bleakest of times. We like David can sing praises when we stay in prayer long enough to know we are in touch with God. While we know that we are always in God’s omnipresence, there is a great feeling in meeting with Him one-on-one. When we draw close to Him, we can’t help but praise Him. When we praise Him everything else seems insignificant.

We too must not allow ourselves to surrender to the circumstances of life. We must keep our focus on the one who is truly in control. We can handle anything when we place our trust in him. Pain, sorrow, and even joyous opportunities will take on new meaning when our hearts are fixed on God.

Psalm 112:7 “He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD.

Isaiah 26:3 “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

I too have been through the valleys that so often would tend to swallow me up, but it was in these valleys that my head knowledge of God would convince my heart that everything would be ok because God was in control and He loved me. When my heart is fixed there is peace, contentment, and great joy.

Is your heart “fixed” on Him? If so, you can say like Luke in Acts 20:24, nothing can move you from finishing this life well.

Act 20:24 “But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.”
