My Song

I love to sing and have since I was a very young child. My singing consisted of Christian songs which I sang at church. I loved to sing so much that I would talk my piano teacher into letting me sing through half of my lesson. Not what my parents were paying for, but I pulled it off for a long time. Music was like water to my soul; it refreshed me and sustained me in many situations. Recently I was studying Revelation 15 and came across verse 3 where the Saints will be singing in Heaven. I know my song will be an endless praise to my Savior.

Revelation 15:1-3 “Then I saw another sign in heaven, great and amazing, seven angels with seven plagues, which are the last, for with them the wrath of God is finished. And I saw what appeared to be a sea of glass mingled with fire—and also those who had conquered the beast and its image and the number of its name, standing beside the sea of glass with harps of God in their hands. And they sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, “Great and amazing are your deeds, O Lord God the Almighty! Just and true are your ways, O King of the nations!”

As John recounts the vision God gave him of Heaven, he sees “another sign in Heaven.” The word sign here means something wonderful or marvelous. This is the only time this word has been used in the Book of Revelation. In verse 1, God’s wrath against the evil one is finished. The victory over the beast is finished, and those who are redeemed are praising God. They worshipped with harps and singing.

The songs were songs of redemption. Only humans can sing this song. We are the only creatures that Jesus died for and the only ones who can be redeemed. We are bought back by the blood of the Lamb!

The singing is jubilant. They sing the song of praise that Moses sang when God led them out of Egypt. This was a great time for God’s people as they were freed from the land of bondage and false gods. However, this song is not as glorious as the one I will sing when I see Jesus. My song is a song of redemption from the bondage of sin. My song is a song that frees me from the penalty of death in Hell. My song will praise Him as the Lord God Almighty. The omnipotent one, all-powerful above all others. My song will praise Him for his omniscience. He knows everything all the time. He knows all my failures. He knows the times I have deceived myself. He knows every struggle, every fear, every pain, and the victories I’ve had through Him. He knows all and still loves me. I will sing praise for His omnipresence. He is everywhere!

When I think of the song I will sing to my God, I think of David’s remarks in Psalm 139:1-12 “O Lord, you have searched me and know me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O LORD, you know it altogether. You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it. Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you.”

Oh what a song I will have to sing to the one who gave His life for me. I can’t imagine ever getting tired of singing my song of thanksgiving and redemption to the Lamb. Hallelujah, what a Savior! Have you thought of what you will sing to Jesus? Or is your idea of Heaven one that focuses on all the things and delights you will enjoy in Heaven? Is your idea of Heaven focused on you or Jesus?
