Deep in our souls, there is a desire to have personal relationships. There is a longing to connect with others. We need someone to love, something to do, and someone to love us. Many seek these three desires all their lives and never fulfill them. They search but never find. Why? Because they are searching in the wrong place. While it is wonderful to have personal relationships with others there is only one relationship that is capable of complete intimacy. That is a relationship with our creator, the only one who knows us better than we know ourselves.
Every relationship starts with some kind of introduction. For instance, my husband and I met on a blind date. That was our beginning. For many years with God, I had a one-sided relationship. God knew me before anyone else. In Psalm 139:1, David begins a Psalm that teaches us how intimately God knows us long before we know Him. His knowledge is perfect about us from conception throughout eternity.
Psalm 139:1 “ O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me.”
Our relationship with God is one that knows all our thoughts. He understands everything we think. He knows our motives. So many times, in life people think they know why we do certain things, but they are wrong. We cannot judge anyone’s motives because we can’t see the heart and minds of others. Sometimes we don’t see ourselves with eyes of truth. We deceive ourselves when we view our hearts through the eyes of the world and not through biblical truths. However, God is never deceived He knows every detail about us. He can and will judge our motives and actions.
Psalm 139:2-4 “Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether.”
In Psalm 139:7-12, God is teaching us that no matter where we are or what our circumstances He is there. We cannot hide from Him. In this life, you may make a multitude of mistakes. You may become a criminal and spend time in prison. When released you change locations and start all over. This allows you to feel as if you have a fresh start on life, but a truly fresh start is when you are saved, and you start a new life as a Christian. This fresh start puts your past behind you with God. You are forgiven and behold all things become new. You have a new relationship with God. You now have a relationship with God as your Father.
Psalm 139:7-12 “Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. Yea, the darkness hides not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.”
II Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
Before we repent and receive Jesus as our Savior, we are not God’s children. Ephesians 2:1-3 teaches us that we were dead in our sins. We acted and lived fulfilling the desires of the flesh as the children of disobedience to God. When we are born, we do not inherit a holy nature but a sinful nature. However, when we accept Jesus as our personal Savior we are “quickened” or made alive. God then becomes our Father, and this intimate relationship can flourish. Not only does He know us, but we know Him.
Ephesians 2:1-3 “And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.”
When we receive Him, John 1:12 teaches us we have the power to become His sons and daughters. Now we have the most valuable personal relationship we could ever have. He is always there. We are always on His mind. Romans 8:16 says His Spirit convinces our spirit we are His. He has the power to protect us, take care of our needs, and grant us eternal life in Heaven with Him. Psalms 130:17-18 gives us a beautiful perspective on this relationship.
John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
Romans 8:16 “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:”
Psalm 139:17-18 “How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee”
