Reckless Love

There is a song that is popular among Christians that carries the title, “Reckless Love.” I understand the idea of the song that God will do anything to reveal himself to me, and He did go to extreme lengths to prove His love. However, the overall theme is not consistent with God’s word. The word “reckless” means to act without thinking or caring about the consequences of an action. The purpose of this devotion is not to criticize a songwriter, but to cause us to think about the truth of our God.

Our God has never done anything in a reckless manner. He has calculated every action and He knows the outcome before the action. He is Omniscient, which is from two Latin words “omins” which means all, and “scienta” which means knowledge. He knows the past, present, and future. In the book The Pursuit of God, A.W. Tozer wrote, “He is omniscient, which means that He knows in one free and effortless act, all matter, all spirit, all relationships, all events.”

It’s hard for us to understand this all-knowing truth because our knowledge is finite. Job 37:16 teaches us that God’s knowledge is perfect and that no one else but Him has this kind of knowledge. In Job 38:4, God asked Job where he was when He formed the world. In other words, you were not here but God was. He can learn nothing and has need of nothing. We are at His mercy, but that’s a great place to be. His mercy, love, grace, and His knowledge cannot be rivaled.

Job 37:16 “Dost thou know the balancing of the clouds, the wondrous works of him which is perfect in knowledge?”

Job 38:4 “Where was thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.”

As we see in I Peter 1:18-21, God knew everything, every person, and every situation before He formed the world. He knew mankind would sin and would need a redeemer. He is holy and cannot look upon sin, therefore we are separated from God by our sins. That is why he provided a sacrifice for those who will accept it in simple faith and obedience. Some may ask why God would create mankind knowing he would reject Him and sin. The answer is love. A love that wanted a relationship with His creation. We have a free will, and while God knows what we will do, He does not determine what we will do.

I Peter 1:18-21 “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.

In the Old Testament, there are over 300 prophecies about Jesus. The prophecy of the virgin birth in Genesis 3:15 was fulfilled in Matthew 1:18. In Genesis 14:18, we are told he will be the King of peace and righteousness, and the fulfillment was recorded in Hebrews 7:2. In Genesis 22:8, He is promised as the Lamb of God, and in John 1:29, He is the Lamb of God. In Genesis 28:12, He is foretold as the bridge to Heaven, and in John 1:51, He is the bridge. In Exodus 12:13, He is the Lamb that will shed His blood to save us from the wrath of God, and in Romans 5:8, it is fulfilled. I could go on and on, but the point is that nothing about God’s love is reckless. It was planned and executed perfectly. Nothing ever surprised God, nothing had to be recalculated or changed. God knew from the beginning what it would take to have a relationship with mankind, and He knew how much it would cost Him. He knows who will reject Him and who will love Him. Reckless gives the idea of doing something before calculating the cost. As I stated before, reckless means to act without thinking or caring about the consequences of an action. God did just the opposite.

He acted with full knowledge of what it would cost to redeem our souls, yet He willingly did it anyway. The fact that God knew all before He created us makes that love greater than we could imagine.
