Son, You Can Trust Her

Today we continue with instructions from the king’s mother to her son. Her instructions are the first in a series of qualities to look for in a wife. In verse 19 the overall quality is that she must be virtuous. To be virtuous is to be of a noble character in every area of life. This is not only the kind of wife he is to look for, but it is also what a Christian woman should be. According to verse 10, she is a rare find. Her value is far above rubies. Rubies were and still are very beautiful, rare, and valuable gems. The rarer, the more desired, and the more valuable.

Proverbs 31:10 “Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

Her husband completely trusts her. She has never given him any reason to not trust her. Her words are truth, and she is totally committed to him. She has never given him any reason to be jealous of her. She does not buy into the world’s philosophy that flirting is harmless. She guards her relationship with her husband and seeks to please him in every way. He doesn’t worry about any of the areas delegated to her. Her primary responsibility is to love and take care of her family. She seeks to do him good. Her reputation is spotless, which elevates the reputation of her husband. He is thought well of in the public eye, and a lot of that is because of the wife he married.

There has never been a time when he questioned her integrity. He could tell her anything, and never fear his confidence being broken. He can take care of his duties at work, because he knows he has nothing to worry about at home. If there is anything she can do to make his life easier, she seeks to do it. Home is a refuge from the world, and she works hard to make it feel that way. He’s not worried that the bills aren’t paid, and creditors will be at the door. In doing him good, she does everything she can to help them be a family that exhibits good stewardship.

Proverbs 31:11-12 “The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.

Trust is a virtue that is in short supply in our world today. Many seem trustworthy, until they reveal their motive. Instead of seeking to serve others, most seek to serve themselves. If they do serve others, they want to know what is in it for them.  If they feel what they did was in vain, or that they were taken advantage of, the service stops, and the gripping begins. That is not true biblical service, but it is manipulating for personal gain. It may not be for material gain, but for the seeking of accolades. Either way, it is selfishness at it’s worst. This person cannot be truly trusted. As soon as things do not serve their purpose the trust is broken.

I read one commentator that said, this man is so happy in her that he feels sorry for those that don’t have a wife like his. He is so happy and satisfied in her, and she in him, that others envy their relationship. What a relationship! This kind of relationship can only happen when both are so in love with God, that everything and every relationship they have, flows out of a love for God. We are so tainted by the sin of selfishness, that we rarely see this beautiful picture of love. However, God gave us the example when he loved us so much that He sent His son for our redemption. Jesus came to serve and all we have to do to reach these virtuous goals and become this type of Christian is to follow Him.
