When we use the word attitude in reference to a person, we generally are implying a bad attitude. However, a person can have a bad attitude or a good one. An attitude is a settled way of thinking or feeling about someone or something, typically one that is reflected in a person’s behavior.
We don’t have to look far in scripture to find the right kind of attitude. No matter what the circumstances we should be able to praise God. Paul was a champion at not allowing the circumstances to dictate his attitude. Look at the times he thanked God, sometimes while in prison.
I Thessalonians 5:18 “In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”
In I Thessalonians 5:18, we are told to give thanks in everything. Everything? Yes, that is what it says. We are to be thankful that we have a God who loves us and will always be with us. Circumstances don’t change God and they shouldn’t change our attitude toward Him.
Ephesians 5:20 “Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;”
In Ephesians 5:20, we are reminded again to give thanks for all things. Commentators believe because of the content of the text it was talking about giving thanks for all people. I love how the Liturgy of the Episcopal church states it, “We, thine unworthy servants, do give thee most humble and hearty thanks for thy goodness and loving-kindness to us, and to all men.” This idea is beautiful, and it agrees with I Timothy 2:1 “I exhort, therefore, that first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all people” This is a command for all Christians. We are to praise God for his general mercy to all mankind, the love He gives to us and His creation, and for the redemption, he offers through Jesus His Son.
Paul again writes about the importance of thankfulness in Philippians 4:6. We are to tell God everything, to express our desires and needs to Him, we are not to worry, but to submit our request with thanksgiving. When Paul wrote this, he was sitting in a prison. If anyone had reason to complain he did, but he didn’t!
Philippians 4:6 “Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”
This heart attitude of being thankful will capture the heart of God. It brings praise to His name and connects us in a way that no other attitude can. True gratitude will help us to overcome the greatest sins that plagues mankind. The sin of selfishness. This sin is at the root of all other sins. Living with a thankful heart places us at the feet of the throne of God, with praise and worship for all He has done. When we focus on what God has done, and the future He is preparing for us, it makes all our problems and desires seem so small in comparison. This attitude touches the heart of God.
