The Day of Consultation

Consultation is the act of discussing, debating, deliberating, or having a dialogue about something. We consult with others when we are getting ready to do something very important. We want to bring everyone involved in the loop and update them on all the pertinent information. Sometimes, we have a consultation because we are the ones who need information. In today’s passage of scripture, it is God who is consulting. In Genesis 1:26, God is consulting with the “three in one.” Here we have God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, coming together for the creation of man. All of Heaven must have known something special was about to happen. Kind of like dessert, God saved the best for last. The pentacle of all creation was coming. God was getting ready for mankind from the beginning of creation, preparing a garden that would feed him, creating the animal kingdom for him to enjoy, the sun and moon to give him light, and the moisture to sustain the plant life they would eat. Everything was there to support his most important creation, man.

Genesis 1:26 “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.”

Here in verse 26, God says, “Let us make man.” For the first time in all of creation, God indicates there will be a coming together or counseling, for the creation of man. He is calling attention to the creation of man as one of preeminent importance. This sets the creation of man apart from all other creations. When creating other things, His words had regard to the thing itself as he summoned it into being, such as, “Let there be light,” or to another creation physically connected with the new creature such as, “Let the land bring forth grass.” This shows us the new creation that is about to happen, is higher than any other creation. It is not associated with any other part of creation such as the land with the plants, but it is associated with the Eternal Uncreated himself.

Mankind would be like no other creation. He would be special, created to rule over everything else that God created. We would bear the image of God. No other creation has that distinction. He created us to be a rational likeness to himself. Meaning we can think, reason, and learn. God put within us the desire to gain understanding and knowledge. We are also moral creatures. We can distinguish between right and wrong because God has written His law on our hearts.

Romans 2:14-15 “For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: Which show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)”

God also made us relational beings. He gave us the ability to communicate, reason, and love. Even the meanest person has a desire and a need to love and be loved. Reason alone would prove our ability to relate to others. After all, God created us, not just to have dominion over all the earth, but to have a relationship with Him. This attribute was so profound in man that God made a woman for him. Mankind now had a relationship with God and with the woman. God saw this relationship so good that he told Adam and Eve to be fruitful and multiply. This brought more people for mankind to relate to, and more for God to have a relationship with.

We are special, not just because God saw fit to bring the trinity together to take part in the creation of man, but because we are made in His image.
