The Goodness of My God

People all over the world have gods. Some are statues they bow to and place gifts at their feet. Some have gods they pray to, but their prayers are nothing more than vain repetitions spoken to an inanimate object. Some worship creation, as if the creation itself can do something for them. Then there are others who only show up at a religious service where they will celebrate the birth or the resurrection of my Savior Jesus Christ. The only time they reflect on His goodness is when they have “that special time of year.” If you look around the world there are as many traditions, gods, and celebrations, as there are people groups. However, most things are done to make the person feel warm and fuzzy, not give worth to the goodness of my God.

My God set himself apart from all the rest before creation. It is my God that manifests Himself in three persons, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Each one is equally God, but with distinctively different roles. There is one God, and He is good in all He does.

His goodness is shown in His mercies. We deserve hell, but because of His mercies, we can have Heaven. It is a place He designed just for us to spend eternity with Him. A place of perfection that we can’t comprehend. His compassion never fails and every day they are new and fresh. We can face each day with hope because of His goodness.

Lamentations 3:22-23  “It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

He is great in all He does. He deserves our praise and there is no end to His greatness. He is good in His wisdom and all His ways. No man can know His mind and He needs counsel from no one. Who could advise God on anything? He is the all-knowing, all-present, and all-powerful God, and all He does is good.

Psalm 145:3 “Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable.”

Romans 11:33-34 “O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counselor?

His goodness is so far removed from what we consider good, that we can’t comprehend how good God truly is. Some measure their desires not being met, as God not being good. They are like a spoiled child. They think they know what is best for them and they fix their mind on their desires, not on what God has in store in the big picture of life. They are cheating themselves out of the true goodness that God alone can give. Nothing is as good as the peace and joy we receive from Him. The deep-seated feeling that everything is under control and I don’t need to worry, because God is always good.

We tend to forget how good God is when we are in pain, or when life deals us with unwanted circumstances. However, this is when we need to cling to passages that teach us about His goodness. How good we think God is will depend on the measuring stick we use. This is the time to meditate on passages of His truths. Therefore, it is vital to your mental and spiritual well-being that you have studied and learned scripture. The Holy Spirit, the Comforter, will bring scripture to your memory if there is something in your memory to bring up, but if the well is dry, there will be no refreshing of the soul when you desperately need it.

John 14:26 “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”

How can we, mere creations of the Creator, trust God’s goodness when we don’t feel like it, or understand what is going on in our lives? First, we don’t trust our feelings unless they are originating from scripture. Our feelings are often based on what we think would make us happy, not the character of our God. In Psalms 100:3, we are instructed to grasp that the LORD is God. This was the Jew’s call to let the world know that “Yahweh” is the true God. This Hebrew word means, “He brings into existence whatever exists.” This gives Him rightful ownership of our lives. We were created by Him and for Him. The Creator of everything knows what is best for His creation. He knows how it will function best in all aspects of its being.

Psalm 100:3 “Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people and the sheep of his pasture.

In Psalm 100:5. we see that he is good, He has a benevolent mindset. The Psalmist connects that with His mercy and His truth. He is also a just God and because of His justice and goodness, we get mercy when we submit to Him. He is not a changing God; therefore, we can trust Him. His truth endures forever. He is the Creator, just, good, merciful, and He is truth to all generations. From the beginning of time throughout all eternity, He will not change. He is and will be faithful to all forever. Those who chose to follow Him will experience all His goodness now and forevermore. Will there be things we don’t understand? Absolutely! We are not God, we don’t know the future, and sometimes don’t live in the reality of the present, but God knows all and desires us to trust His goodness and love for us. How can I not worry about the world my grandchildren, and one-day possible great-grandchildren, will grow up in? I trust the moral character of my God. He will NEVER fail to keep His promises and he promises goodness, truth, and mercy to all generations. My GOD is always good!

Psalm 100:5 “For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.
