We live in a world where everything seems to be running at a pace faster than we can keep up with. Countries are at war with one another and there always seems to be some country lurking in the dark waiting to attack another. We spend billions of dollars to keep peace in our own country. Peace among the people, and peace from those without. Moreover, there is a rising amount of people that suffer daily from anxiety. Their own soul is at war with itself. Yet, God tells us that he is peace not just for our future, but for now.
In Philippians 4:6-7, Paul instructs us to not be anxious about anything. We are to seek God for our needs and to trust Him. This does not mean that we take no care for our daily life, but it means that our confidence in God is so strong that it frees the mind of anxiety. He promises peace that exceeds all understanding when we put that kind of confidence in God.
Philippians 4:6-7 “Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
God never promised to remove all the obstacles of life. We are told in scripture that there will be difficulties and problems. We are Christians therefore, we are in conflict constantly with the world around us. It is going in one direction and we are going in another. Because of that, there will be friction and conflict. However, he has promised that in the middle of trouble and conflict we can experience genuine peace. We can place our confidence in the one who can give us a sense of real peace that this world knows nothing about.
In John 14:27, Jesus knew His time with His disciples was coming to an end. He wanted His disciples to know that he was about to leave them, and he promised them He would return. He assured them the Holy Spirit would comfort them, teach them, and guide them. These truths and promises provided for their peace in a time when their Master was leaving. The one they trusted and loved.
The peace he promises meets all the wants and needs of the soul. It is a peace that quiets the alarms that stir our mind to doubt. This peace is sure no matter what external changes take place. It is a peace that will never leave us. It is a peace the world can’t give. Money can’t buy it and doctors can’t give a pill to fix it.
John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
Only a relationship with Jesus Christ can give this peace. Only he can make a promise of peace and keep it. All that he promises he will do!
