Have you ever wondered why God has left you here on this earth? I have heard many women ask this question. Sometimes it was from those who recently had loved ones deceased, or those who in their estimation did not have a fulfilling purpose. Our world today feeds us lies that we believe. It tells us to be a successful person you must have a successful career outside the home. You also must make lots of money. In the eyes of the world, if promotions don’t come yearly they are ready to move on. For the Christian woman, our roles in the home have been muddied by the feminist movement that teaches us those who have children and stay home are missing out on opportunities to be noticed and better themselves. These feelings and statements are a lie from the devil! In Titus chapter 2, God gives us the pattern for a godly home.
He starts with the older woman and instructs them to teach the younger women.
First, they are to teach from their own examples how to act in a holy manner. The word holy means set apart. We are to be set apart for God. In Leviticus 11:44, God tells his people to be holy because he is holy.
Titus 2:3 “The aged women likewise, that they are in behavior as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;”
Second, within the realm of holiness, there is the command to be truthful. We are not to make false accusations about others.
Third, we are to refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages. In the Bible, God gave permission to use it for medicinal purposes. Even now it is used in some medications, but most use it for recreational purposes. God forbids the latter throughout scripture.
Fourth, Paul wrote to Titus that we are to be teachers of good things. In Proverbs 31:26, she is to teach from a mind of wisdom and a heart of kindness. Women are generally the nurturer in the home. They tend to deal with their children with compassion. Children usually spend more time with Mom than they do with Dad, therefore they learn kindness and compassion from her. Good things are those things that direct us toward God, things that allow others to see Christ in us. In Titus 2:4-5, the older women are to teach the younger to love their husbands and their children. They are to be discreet, meaning self-controlled, and chaste, meaning pure in heart and actions. They are to be keepers at home and obedient to their own husbands. The last sentence is not one most women want to acknowledge but God said it and therefore we must obey if we are to be right with Him.
Proverbs 31:26 “She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.”
Titus 2:4-5 “that they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God is not blasphemed.”
Fifth, Proverbs 31 teaches us that she is industrious doing what she can to help the family financially. This may include working outside the home or simply managing the home in such a way that it is more beneficial for her to be home. The Proverbs 31 woman took care of her family first above everything else. She made their clothing, she prepared their food, she taught her children, and she was so industrious that her husband could do his job without fear of things being left undone at home. She took care of things so well that he was well known at the gates of the city. By his appearance, his attitude, and his countenance the men of the city know he is well taken care of at home.
While there are many women who never marry, they too have a perfect role laid out for them by God. God did not deem that every woman should marry. In Romans 16:1-2, Phebe was a servant of the church. We don’t know in what capacity she served, but her reputation was so impeccable that Paul told the church in Rome to receive her and assist her in whatever business she had. In the next verse, we see Aquila and Priscilla as helpers to Paul in the ministry. Priscilla was the wife of Aquila and their occupation was tentmakers. It appears she worked with her husband. Lydia in the book of Acts was a business lady who opened her home for the church.
Romans 16:1-3 “I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea: That ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and that ye assist her in whatsoever business she hath need of you: for she hath been a succourer of many, and of myself also. Greet Priscilla and Aquila my helpers in Christ Jesus:”
Each of us either married or single have the role of serving Christ first. As a married woman, the Bible makes it clear my first role is in the home. By taking care of my home and training my children I am fulfilling a God-ordained responsibility. If I am single my first obligation is to God by serving in areas of teaching younger women, and children, and showing hospitality to other Christians.
After salvation God’s job for each of us whether male or female is to tell others about Him. We are left here as a witness of His glory and grace. We need to find our answers for our life in God’s word not in what the world expects of us. The world says our worth is in what we achieve monetarily, God says only the spiritual lasts forever. We need to be busy doing all we can to advance the kingdom of God first, and then God will take care of our needs and many of our wants. Stop seeking purpose in the things that will pass away and start finding your purpose in those things that are eternal. One day we will stand before God and give an account of our lives, and only what we have done for Christ will last!
