His Promises Kept

We live in a world of broken promises. Agreements fall through, plans get canceled, and even the people we trust the most can let us down. How often has someone promised you something, and you never saw that promise come to fruition? The word promised means a binding declaration or commitment to do or refrain from doing a specific action. It gives the person receiving it a valid reason to expect a specific outcome. Unfortunately, the promise is only as good as the integrity of the person making it.  Because of our sinful nature, mankind is flawed, and we do not always keep our promises. Because of this, it is easy to unconsciously project that same weakness onto God. We read His promises in the Bible, see the examples of His promises kept, but in the recesses of our minds, we doubt.

In Romans 4:19-21, Paul points us to the example of Abraham. From a human standpoint, God’s promise to make Abraham the father of many nations was impossible. He was nearly one hundred years old, and Sarah was 90, and her womb was barren. Yet, the Bible says Abraham didn’t waver in unbelief. Instead, he grew stronger in faith. In verse 21, it says he was fully persuaded of what God had promised he would do. He was fully convinced of one ultimate truth: God’s ability matches His words. If God said it, it was as good as done!

Romans 4:19-21  “And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara’s womb:He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.”

The phrase “fully persuaded” implies a settled mind. Abraham wasn’t crossing his fingers, hoping for the best; he rested with absolute certainty. Why? Because he didn’t focus on the magnitude of his problem, he focused on the magnitude of his Promise-Keeper.

If God has spoken a truth over your life, if He has promised to never leave you, to provide for you, and to work all things together for your good, you can rest. God not only tells us He will be with us and work on our behalf in Deuteronomy 31:8, but He also continues this thought with a command: don’t fear or fret; don’t even be discouraged. We are to trust Him so much that whatever He does, and however He does it, we will not worry. We must remember that the fulfillment of God’s promises doesn’t depend on your strength, your circumstances, or your perfection. It depends entirely on His power and faithfulness. What He initiates, He is more than capable to complete.

Hebrews 13:5  “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”

Romans 8:28  “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

We are never to doubt the goodness of God. We are to be fully persuaded that His word is truth and nothing or no one can change that. We must take our eyes off our problem and put them on the promise keeper who is always faithful. We can trust His promises will be kept. From our conception to our death, He has given us many promises, and one that I am waiting for is eternal life with Him.
