To Your Virtue Add Knowledge

This knowledge is not about science or experiments to make the world better. It is about knowing God. The creator of all that is and will be.  He, as we say, started from scratch; He created everything from nothing. Therefore, all knowledge ultimately comes from Him. However, the most important knowledge God is giving us, and all who will believe, is His knowledge of how to inherit eternal life in Heaven. Nothing we do can merit or understand salvation without Him. The first knowledge we need to accept and embrace is the way of salvation through the Redeemer, His Son Jesus Christ. In John 3:16, Jesus himself teaches us about what He and God did so that we could have eternal life with Him. II Peter 1:3 teaches us that this knowledge is by His divine power, and when we accept Him as our Lord,

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

II Peter 1:3  “According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue”

One day each of us will stand before God, and the only knowledge that matters then is what you did with Jesus. When we accept Him as our Lord and Savior, we are much like a baby. They have all the parts that make them human, but they must develop and learn how to use their body parts. Peter tells us that through this knowledge we have everything we need to live a successful Christian life, but we must learn from His Word and apply it to grow.

It is our duty to learn all we can about God. In II Timothy 2:15, we are taught to “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needed not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” If we do not study, we will face many situations in life that we do not know how to deal with. In the next verse, Paul tells us what will happen when we do not know God’s word. He teaches us to “shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.”  These pages will not hold the things people have told me they thought were biblical quotes, but were nothing more than sayings they picked up from someone else who did not know the word of God. Psalms 1129:11 reiterates this truth, “Thy word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against thee.”  When we don’t learn God’s word, we are going to battle with Satan without any ammunition. This sets us up for a certain loss.

While God commands us to study His word, we should not do it simply because He commanded it. Our gratitude for what He did for us on the cross should cause us to want to know Him more and more every day. Real love shows itself by the time we spend with the one we love.

Knowledge builds upon knowledge as we learn about Him; our desire should increase to know more.  Our desire to pray and talk to Him throughout the day should be so strong that it is almost overwhelming. Personally, I cannot get enough of Jesus. No matter where I am, I feel connected to Him. My day starts with spending time in the Word, not as a chore, but as special time with the One I love who loves me back. He demonstrated that love when He left a perfect Heaven and left His Father to come to be ridiculed, mocked, and murdered for me. Since God is holy, He cannot be in the presence of sin. This left us out of Heaven. But in Romans 5:8-9, God demonstrated how much He loved us.

Romans 5:7-8 “For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Do you love Him? Not do you have a head knowledge about Him, but do you truly love Him? It is human nature to want to spend time with the ones we love. If you are not spending time getting to know Jesus through His word, you are cheating yourself out of the greatest relationship that has ever been offered to you. Today, get in the Word and learn about Jesus, how He acts, what He desires for you, and how He can help you live a successful, fulfilled life in Him.
